Last week Puerto Ricans lost the owner of La Casita Blanca in Santurce. Jesús Pérez Ruiz passed away on March 10, 2023.
Jesús opened Casita Blanca in 1980 in the Villa Palmeras community of Santurce in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His restaurant had received the James Beard America’s Classics award just a month before.
May his family find peace.
Dr. Cruz Miguel Ortiz Cuandra passed away after his battle with pulmonary cancer.
Cruz Miguel was a Puerto Rican food historian that was pivotal in my research for Diasporican. And more than likely, for anyone that has had to delve into the deep dive that is Puerto Rican foodways. He wrote the book, Puerto Rico en la olla: Somos aun lo que comimos? The English version would become known as Eating Puerto Rico: A History of Food, Culture, and Identity.
May his family find peace.
