If you want to contribute to mami’s f’ing expensive ass burgers.
It appears as if we MAY need to come up with a name for mami’s adventures. There have been more and more requests to highlight The Oracle’s self-proclaimed quest on the best bacon cheeseburger in the surrounding area. Which is totally bizarre to me that anyone would wanna see my mom eat. So, throw some names out there and let’s see what sticks!
RECAP: Last week we were in San Francisco. I really needed to feel Karl hit my face with its mist, I find it so invigorating. And I miss the foggy marine layer of summer every damn day of my life. I took mami to some of the spots where I would go to when I wanted to escape. And there were even a few times where mami gasped when we dropped from Skyline to the Great Highway and that roadside view of the ocean opens up.

After I saw the homie Leo post a burger from Poor Red’s on his Instagram, I was reeled in. As luck would have it, Delfino Farms had released their limited and seasonal blackberry cheesecake. It was only going to be available for two weekends, as those are currently their COVID operating hours. I am so obsessed with their blackberry baked goods, and I bothered them so often, that when they finally posted the announcement on Instagram, they tagged me in it.
Before Delfino Farms, we stopped at Poor Red’s, which has been opened since 1951. It’s in a historic part of El Dorado Hills, and along various routes throughout Gold Country on the way to Lake Tahoe. A lot of bikers stop here to have a drink. So, why was I surprised to see a tent across the street from the restaurant that was petitioning to “Recall Gavin Newsom?” Is that even a real thing?!
The Poor Red’s burger special was "The Whopper." A hulking flame-broiled half-pound beef patty, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles (such good pickles), ketchup, secret sauce on a soft brioche bun. Oh, and seasoned fries. So many rights happening with this burger and fries combo that it made us forget the wrong happening across the way.
The edges of the burger were all charred and the meat flavorful. The pickle chips were thick and snappy. Of course, I added cheese and bacon for mami. That’s mami, not umami. Ooh, that could be the name of her thing, “Burgers with U, Mami.” “Umami with Mami.” No bueno? This towering monster damn near put me in the earth. I like that red leaf lettuce gives some freshness, but I hate how it immediately surrenders to heat. Oh! And the fries. Whoever was working the fryer knows how to tickle the fryer until the fries are super crisp.
I requested the curbside pickup they offer. When the food was finished, a woman wearing a mask brought out our food, got our card, rang it up, brought the card back and I gave her a tip. Seamless. Friendly service. And we didn’t get lynched.
If you want to know if it was a successful visit, watch the video below of mami taking her first bite.
