I would love to read the Thrifty Ice Cream story! I still have memories of stopping there after summer softball. Whenever I tell people the shape of the scoops, they look at me like I'm crazy.

Your article for RESY made me feel as if I had a seat at the table. Here's to good food and memories about our grandmothers <3 My uncle used to work at Thrifty's in Pomona; my grandmother would occasionally drive there after school for a treat! And hooray for the good news regarding your book tour!

I would totally read the Thrifty story, and in fact I’ve been waiting for a story like this. Have you tried the LA Times? They have a new food editing team. Or The Statesider? They do a lot of quirky Americana stuff. Great to hear the book tour is coming together!

Long live Thrifty Ice Cream! Also in case it's helpful, UCD's Temporary Employment Program hires/staffs the cafeteria at the Med Center https://careerspub.universityofcalifornia.edu/psp/ucdavis/EMPLOYEE/HRMS/c/HRS_HRAM.HRS_APP_SCHJOB.GBL?Page=HRS_APP_SCHJOB&Action=U&FOCUS=Applicant&SiteId=7

the comment about fast food confused me...so i looked back at the post. for some reason the post i got in my email had a different title and did not include the segment on your applying for jobs. (i know the obvious answer is simply, you edited it, which is all good! i only mentioned it in case that's not the case as i know you've had some snafus with substack before.)

anyway, three cheers for paychecks and ice cream! i've never had to work a fast food job, for which i consider myself lucky. however it's not at all because it's beneath me - i've worked in data storage pulling staples for eight hours a day (anything that can impede the scanning of documents must first be removed by the grunts and newbies) and i've worked customer service for wayfair where it's just people calling up to yell at you all day. i just don't like being around people physically so i would not fare well at all in a fast food job, or any food service or retail for that matter. i just prefer to be left alone, a little cog in a big machine.

Just a little note to say I hear you - it sucks, doesn't it, constantly wanting to tell stories but no one will let you write them unless they're something to do with the 'thing' you're known for!

I am working an event the day you are doing the virtual cooking class... damn! Well maybe in the future you'll do another and it will work out with my schedule! Nothing wrong with working in fast food. I see the signs saying hiring and starting pay is what I make at a job I have been a year at..... it is definitely tempting!
