I'm happy to see y'all happy in SF. I hope you're able to stay a while. And if this is what writing *on the fly* from your SF Victorian retreat looks like, the book you write from there is certainly gonna be friggin dope.

This one, and the previous (I will comment there), has me smiling over my coffee cup. I had no idea you were also a talented painter in addition to your culinary and writing gifts. I love your new digs and the peace it provides you and your sweet mom. Onward and upward!

Duh. At first I thought they were two separate entries....anyway....about BA. 30+ year subscriber, here. See my picture? I am, or was, their target demographic. The midwestern white lady they used as their hammer when they would tell potential BIPOC their “unusual” ingredients and flavors wouldn’t fly with “them.” You can actually hear Rappoport say it in some of the old video content.

Well, you know what? It flies. It fucking soars. I am so grateful for the unfamiliar; the words I don’t know and the rabbit holes I go down when I begin to seek understanding. I am not overstating it when I tell you, Illyanna, you, and others such as, Toni Tipton Martin, Sohla El Waylly, Michael Twitty, I could go on, but really, because of this newsletter, mostly you, are expanding the ways in which I approach food, cooking, and culture. And for the first time in months and months, I don’t feel dirty or sad when I page through the latest BA issue.

So, if there are those who are calling you an Uncle Tom, ignore it. If we cancel all of the old, institutions, then we slow down progress, I think. We need some of them to stay in place, even if they have to be torn down to the studs, and make them do the work to show change is possible AND profitable.
