THANK YOU!!! i got so tired of reading all the deniers defending the shitty state of affairs in the Bay. and i've been living here far longer than most of those food critics, who weren't even born when i moved to the Bay.

I appreciate your thoughts on this! The other thing people don't talk about is how gentrification in SF (and the rest of the Bay) affects growth and housing in other areas (like Sac). Saying this as one of the many SF natives priced out..

I have a shellfish allergy and if somebody did that to me, especially if I was clear about it, my response would be like the anger management TikTok. Glad he was able to get to the ER for treatment. But no damn way are you in any shape after an allergic reaction (or under any obligation) to continue with the tour. Sounds like there was a Keith Lee Effect, just not the one people expected or wanted.

My hometown, Portland, gets this to a lesser extent. I never quite know how to respond when people (non-west coasters) ask about it.

Thanks for writing this. As someone who is not on TikTok, hasn't visited CA in years, and only learned about Keith Lee after his recent visit to Chicago, I had a very poor understanding of him and what the uproar was about. Really appreciate the recap and, as always, your viewpoint.

I so appreciate this! Keith Lee is out here spreading generosity, supporting independent black-owned businesses, literally changing lives and yet still gets shit every time he's CONSTRUCTIVELY critical. It was the same garbage after he visited Atlanta (although for VERY different reasons and circumstances). I hope he keeps going and I hope more people follow his lead because I'm so damn tired of the standard "made to go viral" food media coverage and find him so incredibly delightful and refreshing.

Super interesting, I don't think this is so well-known in Europe at all. San Fran still sounded like a cool place to visit for holidays to me...

I'm from California and every time I come home I'm in a state of shock. I don't go out. Choosing to just eat in and cook with friends and family.

I think the overall problem with his comments is that it feeds into the doom loop scenario for the Bay Area. The reality is that he has millions of followers and his comments are going to negatively impact tourism for the Bay Area in an already ugly situation from a media standpoint. It ends up being a reinforced scenario where the media is constantly bashing SF and acting like you can't get a sandwich and go sit at Dolores Park without being stabbed or shot, when anyone who lives in the Bay or even spends a decent of time there knows that is not true.

So much of the crime statistics for San Francisco and Oakland is actually robberies/cars being broken into and not actually murder-related. The highest murder rates are actually in red state, but you would never hear that on the news. Oaklandside recently analyzed In-N-Out closing and found that crime is actually high next to all major airports, but Oakland is singled out by a fast food corporation as needing to close due to crime. CNBC proved last year that retail stores in San Francisco and NYC were lying when they said crime is why they closed restaurants.

As far the issues, my opinion, the issue is that San Francisco and Oakland's leaders aren't actually doing anything to address the real problems that the Bay Area has and sit very comfortably in a state dominated by one party that isn't really interested in solving anyone's issues. Mayor London Breed and the leadership around the Bay is easily re-elected despite not solving anyone's problems. It's a serious problem that turnout is so low during elections as well when everyone seems to be facing a difficult time surviving.

There's a similar problem in Florida with the current property insurance crisis where everyone is asking for help, but a supermajority of people on the right feel no need to actually solve the problem since they are currently not feeling any political pushback.
