cold...in august...i'm jealous and also simply cannot fathom such a concept lmao. it's been over 100 with tropical humidity levels in boston and i'm just melting. and thankful for the a/c in our living room & bedroom, but the kitchen and bathroom have none.
some of the things people put in soups are just heinous. i once saw the scraps someone planned to make veg stock from and they included the cores and stems of bell peppers as well as broccoli and brussel sprout trimmings. just the thought of the smell of those things boiling/simmering for literal hours made me feel ill.
anyway, this newsletter was like so many in one for me - i loved getting a glimpse into The Before Times and that mural you did looks fucking cool. i'll keep saying it - i would love to buy & read your memoirs, if and when the time comes. shoutout to all the stuff that simply lives in apartments when people don't all move out at once. at our old place, i finally decided to go through all the cabinets and closets and clean stuff out...we had five coffee makers! and not a single one was ever used. of course, the joke was on me when, after i did this immense deep clean the place burned down. (the landlord had just had somebody go through and inspect and replace smoke alarms and kept threatening to evict us so...well, the cause was never determined but. shoutout to landlords, sketchy scum that they are. like you, it was a wild time and we did make a lot of good memories despite him and others before and after.)
...the place burned down." OMG!!!! I'm so sorry. And I totally sympathize with you because I too had a place I was living in mysteriously burn down. I lost everything I had except the clothes on my back when I was 18. Trauma bonding hug for you.
the hug is received and reciprocated!! i always say even tho the ptsd is real, in a way i'm glad it happened to us and not somebody else. we lost everything but luckily no one was hurt (including all the firefighters that came from all over as it had hit nine alarms by the end) and even more luckily we had an amazing network of family, friends, and community that kept us sheltered and fed and raised money for us to find and furnish a new place. (bless ikea and the miracle of mdf.)
I signed up for the cooking class, I'm super excited! I'm one of those people that will eat soup no matter the temperature. As for eating soup in hot weather, I think it is part of many cultures. I watch Maangchi on youtube and she did a video on a super spicy korean soup and said it was tradition to eat it on the hottest day, and that it helps cool the body down. I don't know how true it is, but I just love soup! I completely agree with leaving rice on the side. I don't add anything to my soup that can get soggy, just serve it on the side or add it when you consume it. Thanks for sharing your stories! I actually had to look up a few words, and I love learning new things!
Yes, like how does it keep you cool? Does sweating while eating hot soup on a very hot day make you feel cooler ? I'm assuming that there is no air conditioning.
i'm guessing it's the same as eating spicy food, and sweating cools the body. but like...i'd prefer simply not sweating, thank you. let me eat ice cream with rice krispies and leave me alone.
"I’ll have to leave that story for my memoirs."
I'll wait.
Yes! I'd preorder that too if it was available now haha
Beautifully written....as always!

(knocks the soup out of Jessica's hands) No summer soup for you!
Great piece and great para starting "There's this sort of standard routine...' Some things I had never thought of before!
Thank you!
I voraciously consumed your writing and your soup sounds delicious! Can't wait for your book to arrive <3

“Why do Latinos eat soup in fucking hot weather?!”

My family says it’s a good way to keep cool.
Like, how though?!! 😂😂😂
